As you get ready for winter break and the holidays, have you ever considered how many holidays are celebrated around the world? For example, we all know that Christmas is celebrated in the winter, but I bet that you can only think of half a dozen or so holidays. You are missing many. There are well over 23 holidays that are going to be celebrated this year.Holidays can be celebrated at any time of the year. For example, one holiday that we know is celebrated in the winter is Hanukkah. A holiday celebrated in the spring is called Easter. In the summer, O-Bon, a Japanese Buddhist holiday is celebrated and in Autumn the Day of the Dead starts on October 31, our Halloween.
Some holidays are celebrated in just one or a few countries while others are celebrated worldwide. Labor Day is celebrated in 66 countries around the world. New Year’s is celebrated in at least 20. Christmas is celebrated in at least 25 countries around the world, and these are just a few examples of many.

Mexico: One of the most popular holidays in Mexico is called the Day of the Dead. It is celebrated in the autumn. On the day of the dead, Mexicans think about loved ones that have died. The people that celebrate this holiday have a meal out by the graveyards.
Thailand: One of the most popular holidays in Thailand is Songkran. Songkran is a holiday celebrated in the Spring. It is 3 days long. On Songkran, people in Thailand have a huge water festival. It is the Buddhist celebration of the new year. Parades have huge statues of Buddha that spray water on people passing by. People also throw water at each other just for fun, while fishermen also release fish as a act of kindness.
Pakistan: In Pakistan, one of the most popular holidays celebrated is Basanth. Basanth is celebrated in the spring. For Basanth, boys celebrate the first day of Spring with exciting kite flying contests. At the end of the day, they put powdered glass on their strings so that they can cut off all the other boys strings.
Ecuador: In Ecuador, one of the most popular holidays is called the New Year. The New year is celebrated in the winter. On the New Year, families dress a straw man in old clothes. The straw man represents the old year. The family members make a will for the straw man that lists all of their faults. At midnight, they burn the straw man, hoping that their faults will disappear with him.
