The Final Feminist Friday

For the last Friday of National Women’s Month, we’re going to end with four of the most current, influential and amazing feminists of the 21st century.

Tina Fey is regarded as one of the funniest people on the planet along with being a feminist. She grew up in Philadelphia and went on to study drama at the University of Virginia. She is best known for her work on SNL, which was one of the biggest moments in her comedic career and she worked with people like Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers and fellow feminist Amy Poehler. She has continued to create her own TV show, 30 Rock, write classic movies like Mean Girls and has won numerous Emmy’s. Throughout her comedy sketches, movies, TV shows and more she has shown the world her presence as a powerful woman. Within her comedy she displays the gender inequalities in our society and has broken through in the world of comedy including becoming the first female to be a head writer for SNL. In her autobiography, Bossypants, she also explains a lot about being a woman working in the television and comedy industry. She has changed so much in how women are portrayed on television and she has become one of the most iconic feminists in the 21st century.

Malala Yousafzai is one of the youngest feminists right now but who has changed so much about women’s rights and their education. Malala is currently 18 years old and lives in Birmingham, England. She grew up in Pakistan where the Taliban had begun to take control of the area. They began taking away the rights of girls to education and Malala began speaking out about this when she was as young as eleven. By the time she was 14 she received death threats from the Taliban, because of her advocation for women’s rights. On October 9th 2012 when she was coming home from school, she was shot by a gunman and was rushed to the hospital needing multiple surgeries. She moved to England because it is not safe for her to return to Pakistan but she continues to speak about the importance of education and of women’s rights. She has spoken to the U.N, won the Pakistan National Youth Peace Prize, written her own autobiography, I Am Malala, and is the youngest person to ever win a Nobel Peace Prize. She is an incredible activist and she has been able to make many changes to how people view girls education in places where they have been denied their rights. Although she is still very young, she is making huge strides in the fight for women and girls to be educated like men and boys.

Lilly Singh is a comedic YouTuber who has worked hard to show the gender inequalities in our society and who has worked very hard to change it. She has over eight million subscribers and over one billion views on her YouTube channel under the name IISuperwomanII. She makes stand up comedy videos on her channel. Her goal has been to make people laugh and to make people happier yet her career has gone so much farther. She launched her world tour in 2015 called A Trip to Unicorn Island, and in 2016 has moved on to launch a documentary about that tour and her life in a movie titled A Trip to Unicorn Island. She works so hard to promote equality not only on the social media world and YouTube but in how girls and women are treated all over the world. She created a project called #GirlLove where she has worked to stop girl on girl hate. One of the goals of this project is to try and bring girls together. As a social media celebrity, Lilly Singh has had so much influence on the equality of the sexes and continues to work to end hate and achieve gender equality.

The final feminist is Emma Watson. Best known for her role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter series, she began as a child actress and since has also starred in many other films such as Noah and The Perks of Being a Wallflower.  As she grew up and moved away from the Harry Potter franchise, she cut her hair and became an activist for women’s rights. She now is a U.N. ambassador for women’s rights and gender equality. She has become one of the most influential, famous, important, iconic and amazing feminists of all time. Throughout her acting career and her political activism career she has become an incredible role model for so many young girls. Along with advocating for gender equality she went to Brown University and she has appeared on covers of magazine where she continues to spread her message of gender equality. Emma Watson is a truly iconic and amazing feminist and one of the best feminist role models for girls everywhere.
