Essena O’Neill is 19-year-old woman from Australia who decided to quit social media. She was a part of a new phenomenon of “Instagram models,” typically girls ranging from the age of 15 into their 20s, who decide to take a stand against the obsessive perfectionism fueled by social media. She was often paid for wearing a dress, tagging the designer and posting it on Instagram for her 500,000 followers to see. But then, in early November, she decided to leave the social media world. Many people are asking, “but why would she do that? Why would she walk away from that perfect life?”
Most students at GFS will admit to being a victim of overscheduling. This phenomenon is making its way into lots of middle schoolers’ lives and is resulting in sleep deprivation and stress, which are two things that shouldn’t be a major part of middle school students’ life. Our schedules are seeming to take over our brains, on some days making us completely dysfunctional without three cups of coffee. Why is rushing from place to place, having hours of homework, playing two sports, three instruments and still keeping up with your Instagram account now the norm?
Germantown Friends students have a lot on their plate: one has to be a good student and an athlete for school, a good child/grandchild/sibling/family member, maybe one has an extracurricular or two, and a social life on top of all that, and one also needs some time to relax and unwind.
